Finding a Great Wine to go with Soups and Stews

Soups can be a challenge to pair with wine. The season gets cooler and the craving for warm and hearty meals start to rise. Wine and cool weather definitely go together, but how do you choose a wine to go with these winter wonderland meals?

Let’s look at some popular meals and find some wines to go with them.

If you are looking for ‘rules’ the same sort of rules apply to soups as to other meals. Look at the ingredients the meal uses to help decide on a match. Look at the heaviness of the meal and pair with a suitably bodied wine.

Chicken

Light chicken dishes such as chicken noodle soup could be a good match for whites such as pinot noir. Heavier fares such as chicken pot pie or a creamy chicken soup could stand up to a Sauvignon Blanc.

Beef

Cabernet Sauvignons and Shiraz’s are a likely pair for hearty beef dishes such as chili’s and stews.

Chowders

There are several chowders which go well with a wine such as a Chardonnay. New England style clam chowder is one example.

As you can see, there are definitely wines which can suit a meal based around a soup or stew. As the weather cools, wine becomes an appealing accompaniment to a warm and comforting meal. Experiment a bit and you will find it rewarding to find just the right wine to go with your favorite winter meals.

If you are looking at expanding your wine reportoire, wine of the month clubs offer prescreened wines of quality. You may just find some perfect whites and reds for your soup recipes.
