Are There Any Sweet Red Wines?
PortThe sweet red wine that comes to most people’s minds is port. Port is on the extreme side of sweet - it is a sipping wine rather than one for drinking. It goes amazingly well with some desserts such as dark chocolate. The flavors are rich and complex and thoroughly enjoyable. Port is definitely a good start to break into the reds, but keep in mind it is more like a liqueur than a wine. Gentle, Softer WinesTannins in red wines are what cause much of the ‘dryness’ – or dry mouth feel after tastes. The tannins are perhaps the ingredient which takes the longest to get used to when trying to become accustomed to red wines. Low tannin wines may seem ‘sweeter’ because of the lesser ‘dry’ qualities. Good choices to start with are Shiraz, Zinfandels, Merlots, Beaujolais and Chiantis. These go down easier than some sharper, dryer wines and have slightly more sweetness or fruitiness. As you get used to those wines, you’ll realize that the dryness is what most people enjoy about reds. Chances are you’ll grow to become accustomed to them and appreciate them for what they are. As you get used to the dryness, you can begin to try many different kinds of reds. Red wines truly are an acquired taste – to which many people become accustomed and often grow a great attachment to. Sweet red wines are a good way to begin the journey into more complex varieties. Joining a wine of the month club
is a great way to experiment with wines you might not normally try. Many
clubs have the option of choosing red wines, white wines, or one of each
per month. You might want to consider trying a half and half club in order
to become exposed to quality reds while enjoying white wines as well.
